Library of Congress on Flickr

Jack Whinery and his family, homesteaders, Pie Town, New Mexico (LOC)I’ve been spending more time than I should browsing thousands of photos the Library of Congress has uploaded to Flickr. I really had no idea that there are color photos taken a hundred years ago that almost look like they were snapped with a digital camera yesterday. Just, wow!

Lots of libraries are putting digital content up on their websites, but some get overwhelmed by the technology and time involved. The LoC has shown that making materials available to the masses can be done easily with tools like Flickr. No software to install. No resizing of images. They are even letting the public do the cataloging (tags and comments) for them. Very cool.
