  • Maintain and troubleshoot all technologies within the SWON Libraries offices, including staff computers, computer lab and classroom, phone system, and other equipment.
  • Configure and maintain the organization’s web, mail, and file servers, including all hardware, software, networking, and security. Host web sites and projects for other library-related organizations.
  • Develop the organization’s web sites using standards and best practices. Use scripting languages, databases, and content management systems to facilitate and enhance projects.
  • Use open source and custom software to develop and maintain shared technology projects for the membership, including the Greater Cincinnati Memory Project and Media Catalog.
  • Provide consultation and referral services for member libraries, including grant recommendations/reviews, hardware/software recommendations, cost estimate, recommendations for new services, troubleshooting, and web site evaluations.
  • Develop and present training classes on technology topics for libraries.
  • Participate in organizational planning and special projects.

Accomplishments

  • Served as Interim Director on two occasions for a total of 15 months.
  • Built the GCLC/SWON Libraries technology infrastructure from the ground up.
  • Developed an online event management and registration system in PHP and MySQL.
  • Presented over 150 training sessions for the SWON Libraries membership and at national, state, and regional events.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as UNIX programmer and administrator for the University Libraries’ web server, electronic reserves server, and electronic catalog systems. Recommend, install, configure, test, and tune systems to ensure efficient and uninterrupted system operation. Develop and maintain Perl, CGI, C++, and shell scripts for web-based and administrative applications. Consult with the University Libraries’ Web Manager to maintain web server operations and services. Serve as backup for the Libraries’ Web Manager.
  • Serve as TCP/IP network administrator. Consult with the University’s Computing and Telecommunications Department to maintain, tune, and troubleshoot the University Libraries’ firewall configuration. Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the University Libraries’ proxy server. Configure local systems and consult with OhioLINK to grant/deny access of local and OhioLINK resources by the Affiliated Institutions.
  • Supervise the Library Computing Services Department’s student employees. Interview, hire, prepare work schedules for, and assist in training of student employees. Appraise student employee performance and execute disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Served as WSU’s primary liaison to OhioLINK. Analyzed PC and file server hardware to ensure optimal system performance. Participated in the selection, implementation, and evaluation of new PC products and services. Installed and configured PC software. Configured and managed the University Libraries’ LAN. Trained library staff in network operations and use of PC applications. Served as temporary Web Manager for the University Libraries for a three-month period.
